A Tale of Two Cities

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. With these famous words, both Charles Dicken's novel and the movie begin. Sydney Carton, an alcoholic lawyer, is called upon to take the case of a French emigre named Charles Darnay, who has been falsely charged of treason. Charles is the nephew of the Marquis St. Evremonde, one of the most cruel aristocrats in France. The Marquis paid a man named Barsad to place the false charges on his nephew, who had fled to England to be out from under his tyranny. He has to leave behind his tutor, Gabelle, in France, but promises to help him come to England later.

Because Sydney had met up with Barsad, the man who was supposed to accuse Charles of treason, and without telling him who he was, tricked him into saying the truth, that the charges were false, he is able to make Barsad change his position during the trial. Because of that, Charles goes free.

While Sydney does not even try to win Lucie, Charles does, and at Christmas he asks Dr. Manette to marry Lucie. The Doctor agrees, although Charles tells him who he really is, an Evremonde. They are married and all goes well until one day when Charles receives a letter asking for help from his tutor, Gabelle. He was forced to write the letter by the Revolutionaries, hoping to lure Charles to France. He goes at once, only sending a note to Lucie.
