An Introduction to the Sport of Bowling

An Introduction to the Sport of Bowling Many consider bowling to be a simple game, but it is actually a complicated sport. To begin to understand why bowling is so complicated you will need a little back round information first. Such as the different kinds of lanes, what oil is, the different lane conditions, how to keep score, the different kinds of approaches, what ball reactions are, what the difference is between the three kinds of bowling balls, and how to bowl. (Richardson) First you need to know that there are two different kinds of lanes. The most common type lane is the synthetic lane. This type of lane is called synthetic because it is actually man made imitation wood. The other type of lane is wood. Wood lanes are called wood lanes because they are made of wood. The synthetic lane is seen more often today since it is easier to maintain then the wood lane.(Richardson) The synthetic lane is easier to maintain because the wood lanes have to have an oil finish on them to protect the lane from the ball when it is rolled on it. So since the balls are rolled over and over on the lane the oil wears away and has to be applied at least twice a day. Where as the synthetic lane are still oiled, but not to protect the lane. T

Then there is the urethane ball which is not made any more. There are four keys to a good stands. So they only have to oiled once every other day to protect the ball. All three kinds of balls can be dull or shine. This hock or lack of hock is called the balls reaction. The first is the straight ball release. In this release the thumb is pointed towards the hip. This type of swing is when you do the half circle, but right before you release the ball you get your body down with the ball and roll it smoothly. If your left handed start on your left foot. The urthane ball will have different kinds of reaction weather it is dull or shine. This swing is a half circle that goes straight back and then straight while going forward. It will hock a lot if it is dull and if it is shine it will react a little. The other thing you should make sure you do is to keep your swing straight back and forward. (Richardson) This oil that is put on the lane acts as a lubricant between the ball and the lane. The main idea behind adjusting is to move in the direction of the error.
