Routers

A router is a general device that is used to segment a network, with the goal of limiting broadcast traffic and providing security, control, and creating multible paths. It is a device that connects multiple LANs at the network layer and has access to network addresses, and it operates with respect to protocols. Routers have advantages as well as disadvantages. Among disadvantages, this device is new in the market, and that's why the price range is kind of high. But the good side is as more they are being used in the market today, the price is being lowered. Another disadvantage is, it is a very protocol oriented device and to maintain the framework it uses very large applications, such as operating system and management software. It provides firewall service and economical WAN access. Similar tobridge a Router provides filtering and bridging functions across the network. This device converts LAN protocols into WAN protocols and performs the reverseprocess at the remote location. It can be used for point to point network and in certain situation router combines bridges or work as a bridge for the LAN. It offers more intelligance, and has more complex network and traffic control management than bridges do. Routers have the potential for flow control and error protection.
There are two types of routing that a router uses, static routing and dynamic routing. Static routing is when the network Managers configure the routing table to set fixed path between two routers. If a link goes down, it will issue an alarm but would not reroute the traffic. Dynamic routing is when the router reconfigures routing table automatically and recalculates the most efficient path interm of load, line delay and bandwidth. Some of these dynamic routers even balance the traffic load across multiple links and allows many links to handle peak traffic conditions.
Routers are classified as their service capabilities and workload. There are th
