The Old Man and the Sea

             "In the Old Man and the Sea," Ernest Hemingway writing style brought out the true understanding of the novel. His sentence structure, word choice, and the use of dialogue, gave a certain kind of perspective to the novel. His sentence structure sound exactly like a fisherman talked.
             Hemingway uses broken English but to a point in which readers can understand. In (pg 105) an example of his use of sentence structure, "I have no understanding of it and I am not sure that I believe in it." This sentence could be restated, I don't understand it and I'm not sure I believe it. Hemingway is very unique in the way he uses sentence structure. It gives the reader an opportunity to understand Santiago's personality.
             To understand Santiago's personality, Hemingway uses specific words to describe him and his environment. Hemingway talks about how strange Santiago is and his environment. In (pg 15) Hemingway describes Santiago's home. "The mast was nearly as long as the one room of the shack. The shack was made pf tough bud shields of the royal palm which are called guano and in it there was a bed, a table, one chair, and a place on the dirt floor to cook with charcoal." Readers can visualize exactly how Santiago shack looks like. It also gives a thought of how Santiago lives like. When readers start reading the novel, they realize that Santiago is poor by the description of him and his shack.
             Hemingway uses dialogue and third person point of view to explain Santiago thoughts and feelings. When Santiago goes out to sea, Hemingway get into his mind and express Santiago feelings to the reader. In (pg 106), Hemingway expresses one of Santiago's feelings. "Besides, he thought everything kills everything else in some way. Fishing kills me exactly as it keeps me alive. The Boy keeps me alive, he thought. I must not deceive myself too much."
