In The Stranger Albert Camus depicts the main character Meursault as an amoral, insensitive and callous individual. Though Meursault at times throughout the book shows the ability to understand one's feelings, he doesn't show much compassion towards anything. Also at times his actions go against common morals one might show in today's society. Throughout the novel Meursault seems more concerned with his own well being and puts whatever is in his own personal best interest before that of others. Those are just several of the many character traits that Meursault shows through the course of this book.
             The book opens with Meursault talking about how his mother has just died. Not being sure whether she died the previous day or day before that, he comes to the conclusion that either way it doesn't matter much at all. Meursault knew for the last several years of his mother's life that she was sick and did not visit her on a regular basis. When she died and Meursault went to her vigil he proceeded to smoke cigarettes and drink coffee in the same room as her casket and make conversation with the caretaker. Having a strong relationship with one's family is a sign of strong morals and Meursault clearly shows no sign of closeness with his mother. Also another sign of bad morals comes when Meursault sees Marie for the first time in a long while and he sneaks cheap feels on her breasts, he also later sleeps with her upon their first night together. Those show bad morals and also disrespect towards others and himself.
             Another reoccurring character flaw he shows throughout the course of the book is his tendencies to be insensitive. He showed that side when he saw ladies crying at his mother's vigil and didn't understand why they were doing so. He knew that they must have been close to her in some sort of way but he still didn't see the relevance in them crying at her vigil that day.
