The purpose of forensic facial reconstruction is to produce an image from a skull which offers a sufficient likeness of the living individual that it will facilitate identification of skeletal remains when there are no other means available. Although facial reconstruction had begun in the nineteenth century, the method gained notoriety with the work of Gerasimov (1968), depicted on film in Gorky Park. These traditional 'plastic' methods use modelling clay or plasticine to build up the depth of tissue on the skull (or a cast of the skull) to that of a living individual. Tissue depths are known for 'landmark' sites on the skull; the depths elsewhere are interpolated between these points (Figure 1) and then into the interstices (Figure 2). The shape of the eyes, nose and mouth cannot be confidently predicted and are largely guesswork (Figure 3). Even for skilled practitioners, plastic reconstructions take one or two days. The results obtained will differ between reconstructions and between practitioners.

Nearly all of the simulators produced up to the mid 1950's had no fuselage motion systems. Electronic warfare interference can be simulated on radio nets and computers work out casualty rates for any engagements. The first colour system was produced by Redifon in 1962. At this point, the law of diminishing return began to operate, the cumulative errors caused by all the additional hardware exceeded the improved accuracy which should have resulted from the more extensive aircraft data, which demanded the extra hardware.
These early simulators were very expensive and lacked flexibility because models were used to simulate terrain. A pilot study on the collection of tissue depth measurements from CT scans has been carried out by one of our team .
In these early stages, in a fully-integrated ITV environment today, a viewer will be able to read more about the topics presented during a show at the time she or he scheduled the show to play back or broadcast; download and store related media files or special interactive documentation for later viewing or perusal; purchase goods associated with a program; share, in context and in real-time, their knowledge or interpretations about the broadcast through various communications applications; use banking, betting, or video-on-demand applications; and finally, participate in competitive or cooperative group activities in association with video content. A telephone line modem connection is needed however to access the internet via the television, make purchasing requests, respond to programme polls and send e-mails. The industry has now reached a point in commercial flying training, where all conversion and recurrent training can be conducted in a simulator, so that a pilot of one aircraft type, can be cross trained to another, without ever actually having flown the real target aircraft, until he or she is on board, carrying fare paying passengers. Gunnery simulators were the first systems for tanks crews but now the whole crew can experience virtual combat from inside a mock-up vehicle. Simulators on this pattern were also built in the United States, but the shortcomings of the shadow graph system seems to have limited the success of the concept.
On the other hand, cable and satellite media providers/operators, also called Multiple system operators (MSOs), are hoping the public will want and pay for basic ITV services such as information and Internet portals, video-on-demand, or banking services only.
