The short story ¡°A Rose for Emily¡± by William Faulkner portrays how an overly protected love could destroy one¡¯s life. Emily Grierson, the main character of the story, first gives the reader an impression of acting inhumane and even mad. But after a closer look into her character, I think that the reader could almost understand how and why she turned out the way that she did.
             Emily Grierson is a woman who became very dependent on others, primarily her father. She has grown up her whole life in the same house, probably with the same butler, and with the only company of her father. The reader could clearly see that Emily¡¯s father made her live sheltered and away from everyone, because he thought that ¡°none of the young men were quite good enough for Miss Emily¡± (364). With everything being controlled by her father, losing him probably never crossed her mind. Her mother is assumed to be dead long ago. Faulkner does not answer this question. Something must have happen to her while Emily was still young. Something had to happen to make Emily¡¯s father act the way he did toward Emily.
             Miss Emily is also overly possessive, enters Homer Barron. Homer Barron fits the role of a new person perfect for Emily. He did not know of the town gossip and this was at the advantage of Emily. She immediately grew very close to Homer and almost forced him into her life. When Emily¡¯s cousins moved into the house that Emily had lived in her whole life, the people in the town noticed that Homer Barron was gone. Some comments were made that he had left until Emily¡¯s family got out of there, and others said that he had gone on to prepare for Miss Emily¡¯s coming. Meanwhile, the townspeople talked of Homer being gay because he himself had remarked that he liked men, and it was known that he drank with the younger men in the Elks¡¯ Club. Emily grew fearful of Homer¡¯s departure, fear of being left alone once...
