Sociology Childhood Development

             From the moment in time that we are brought into this world we are shaped and molded into the person that we have become. Our personality, behavior, traits, positive and negative qualities are all developed by everything around us. The most obvious influence in our lives when we are first brought into this world is our parents, or lack of parents. "Our Parents are the first significant others who teach us."(Henslin, 65)
             Our parents or guardians play a major role in a child's development. If the parent regards a child as a precious loved human being and is shown love and the child feels loved, he or she will more likely than not practice the same thing down the road. If a child is constantly being praised and shown affection, he or she will grow up treating others the same way. If a child is neglected and grows up in an environment where he or she is mistreated, abused and unloved, the child will have a harder time in society dealing with the everyday issues of life.
             My past experience has allowed me to understand this first hand. For about 6 months over the period of a year, I worked at a psychiatric center. My title was Mental Health Worker. This position allowed me to interact with patients ranging from 4 years old up to 85 years of age. This as well gave me access to each file of every patient I worked with. This was necessary because I was required to write up reports each day on specified patients and chart their progress or lack of progress each day.
             In regards to the children I worked with, there was a countless number of reasons as to why they were admitted to the hospital. Many grew up in homes with parents who were drug addicts and were often abused sexually, physically or verbally. One file was harder to read than another.
