West Side Story transfers Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to present-day New York. The love story of Romeo and Juliet becomes that of Tony, a native-born Polish boy and Maria, a Puerto Rican girl newly arrived in America. They learn about each other and develop a strong relationship amongst street gangs in the city's West side. I’m surprised because the setting in the musical was New York. Why would we want to colonize someone’s land? It would lead to war. other while trying to break up a rumble, violence erupts.
My opinions and feelings about the musical:
When the two gangs develop a fight, Maria and Tony try to make the violence stop. We always are proud when victory is ours. Last year there was a terrorist attack. In the end a Shark gang member kills Tony but Maria remains alive and unharmed unlike Juliet.
In this musical, Maria and Tony take a chance for love, freedom, and peace. In the end, both gangs realize violence is no use and if we understand each other, we can live a problem free life!
