Shatter your goals

There’s just something about high sports. I’m not sure if it’s the pride, the rush of them, or just the hometown fame you gain. What I will never forget about high school sports is a Powerlifting coach I had my junior and senior year. See high school sports not only allow students to have fun, but it also teaches students responsibility. It molds students to a outstanding class of citizens.

Brownfield, Texas is a small town in the south part of the Panhandle. It has one high school, which is a 3-A high school with about six hundred students. The faculty at BHS has always cared about the students there, and vise-versa. It was half way though my junior year, and it was our schools first year to have powerlifting. It was strange to most of us, because we have never heard of this sport. We really didn’t understand the whole concept of it. I remember the first powerlifting meeting. We all met after off season the first Monday back from Christmas break.

Coach H, The AD/Head Football Coach gave us a small speech and then introduced us to our new Powerlifting coach. He said “Men and women, I would like you to meet coach N the head powerlifting coach.” The first words out of coach N’s Mouth were “we’re going to work

. . .

He said “I know all of us are nervous, but don’t worry. Just do what we’ve been doing for the past month and it will all be ok once we get this thing started.

As the season drew nearer, he taught us that winning was just a small bonus to what powerlifting was all about. Coach N said a few words on the bus that day outside the Sundown High School Gym. There was still a long ways to go, so at the end of the year coach had one thing to say to us. That day though it must had just been his voice, that made all the butterflies in my stomach fly away. I made it to the state powerlifting meet at Texas Christen University, where i placed eighth in the state of Texas. After weeks of intense weightlifting training, everyone was ready to show what their muscle’s could do. hard , and were going to get strong. He was the reason the whole team was like a big family. No one has every had this effect on me, It was just like he cared about you like you were his own son. Our first year of powerlifting we did great for a first year team. The whole team went out three days of the week, and lifted hard. ” As I think of those words he said that day, it doesn't seem like anything special.
