Revenge in the Context of The Crucible

Since the beginning of man the ideology of revenge has been established. With Kane bringing down the stone on Abel came the concept of revenge. It is something that everyone has done and everyone has wanted to do. Revenge corrupts people's minds trying to persuade them to do things that are unethical in order for one's own benefit. The Crucible by Arthur Miller displays many of these characteristics. Many of the characters disregard their own values in seek of a vicious revenge. They capitalize on people's fears of witchcraft and the devil. Taking great pleasure in putting the blame on others is a trait many of these evil characters possess. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller the concepts of revenge are splattered throughout the novel like a partner's paint on a canvas through the vandalistic characters of the Putnam's, Parris, and Abigail. Ann and Thomas Putnam keenly display the concept of vengeance. They strive to be well but cannot. Thomas Putnam seeks revenge on both Parris and Proctor. Putnam's brother-in-law Bayley is seeking a position in the ministry. Parris seizes this position upsetting Putnam wanting Putnam to seek revenge on Parris. This quote from the text illustrates this point, "He [Putnam] was a man

When the loyal characters stand up for what they truly believe in, they are unjustly prosecuted and sentenced to death. This is stated when Proctor says, "Your grandfather had a habit of willing land that never belonged to him, if I may say plain" (1050). Revenge screams in the head of the teen-age girl of Abigail Williams. The strong characters in the play are taken advantage of by these bloodthirsty people. As one can see, Abigail is a character that has no morals and seeks revenge for her personal benefit. The Putnam's, Reverend Parris, and Abigail are all searching for their happiness on the benefit of others. She is also quick to charge other people beside herself. She states this about Tituba, "She sends her spirit on me in church; she makes me laugh at prayer!" (1057). Through various manners in The Crucible, the Putnam's, Reverend Parris and Abigail seek sheer vengeance out which helps illustrate the concept of revenge over justice. Bayley, had been turned down as minister at Salem" (1041). This is displayed when he says, "Where is my wood? My contract provides I be supplied with all my firewood" (1049). One may deceive this as a downright shook, but Arthur Miller makes sure to make it very deliberate.
