Self-worth

As society and humanity evolve, so do its social nuisances and dilemma's. As adolescents continue to seek acceptance and self-worth social groups will continue to exist. Social groups help develop social skills, fulfill emotional needs, offer an environment in which they are valued, provide goals, and give direction and structure to their lives (Kinnear, 1). If society unfairly labels people as useless or unacceptable, those who are disregarded stick together as forms of support. That is exactly what society does to gang members today. "Gangs are socially constructed entities. Their existence is inextricably linked to the larger society's politics; it's skewed relations of power, the limited access to its economic resources, and the systematic persecution and exclusion of certain populations from participation in it" (Phillips, 72). If society is unwilling to look past its own persecution and destruction, the actual motive of the "socially neglected", then how will it ever solve or abolish gang violence? Ignorantly, most people think that, "a gang is a gang is a gang", or that all gangs are the same (Cummings/Monti, 28). This assumption that all gangs and all gang members are the same causes condemning stereotypes, wh

gangs became involved in dealing Marijuana, LSD, and PCP with a corresponding growth in gang violence associated with the push to establish drug territories" (Kinnear, 20). People unfairly base their feelings towards others on what they are told, rather it be truth or a stereotypical rumor. The gang's territory also plays a key role in drug sale and is used by the gang as "a place of security". Cities try to arrange gang treaties and truces to decrease crime. When people are ignored or treated unfairly they tend to stick together. Gang activity has seemed to have noticeably increased in the past couple of decades. There is nothing we can physically do about gang violence because gangs are able to be violent anywhere at any time, but we can try to prevent gang activity. Federal authorities sometimes get involved in efforts to intervene in gang activities. Another factor that affects gang violence is drugs, the use of and distribution of narcotics. "Fighting is taken quite seriously because it involves the protection of their territory against other gangs," says Frederick M. It's been found that truces don't seem to last long before something triggers their destruction (Kinnear, 23). According to Kinnear, "Police departments use a variety of techniques to gather information about gangs and individual gang members" (Kinnear, 22). Gang activity is very preventable, and it's a shame on our government to pretend the situation is uncontrollable, or out of their hands.
