Leadership

In today's society things are communicated to us through many different forms. We receive information through television, radio, newspapers, magazines, the Internet, and email but it seems we have forgotten one of the fundamental ways of communicating...simple person-to-person conversation. Personal contact and the daily dialogue that comes with that is often missing in many of our personal and professional relationships today. We often hear that good communication is the key to a successful marriage, why then should we expect this to be different in the workplace? Doesn't it seem like a simple idea that the same formula for success would be true in business? Too often we hear about the lack of communication or the destructive communication that occurs in the workplace. In today's business world the open, positive communication that was once used to help solve the problems inside organizations have given way to gossip and silence. Neither the amount of educated, experienced, or talented people an organization employs nor the amount of money it has will determine how an organization fairs, but instead it is the communication and character that the leaders and employees alike display that will ultimately lead to the success o

If I were completely satisfied doing what I am doing I would go in do my job and collect a paycheck each week but that is not enough for me. The so called leaders of many of these companies are so far removed from the day to day activities that don't know the chaos that is going on under the roof of the very building they work in. If you notice morale drooping, you must take decisive action before the situation becomes chronic and jeopardizes your entire organization" (15). The wall may be the tangible divider but it is amazing how personally separated we all feel from one another. We are divided into two groups depending on the project we are working on. These aren't personal phone calls or personal faxes but company business that is being tossed away or ignored to spite a co-worker. In James Hillman's The Soul's Code: In Search of Character and Calling, he makes mention that although some people are born with special talent it is only a piece of an image but "only when the talent serves the fuller image and is carried by its character do we recognize exceptionality" (251). " This reminds me of Coach Holtz's story in Winning Every Day about identifying the problem before you can solve it. The reports are sent to my boss who doesn't even understand them so he usually ignores them. Only in one instance did he talk to anyone about the uneasiness they felt at work, but he didn't relate it to the gossip and destructive communication that is constant there but instead said "you must have too much on your plate and you are working long hours, we'll see about getting you a raise to fix this stress your feeling. Most of these problems stem from, again, lack of communication. The projects we work on are totally separate and none of us are a threat to the other but for whatever reasons the constant gossiping and bickering continues. Holts thinks that mastering communication is easy since the "Lord gave you two ears and one mouth because he wants you to listen twice as much as you speak" (15). You must welcome adversity as a test of your resolve: (29).
