Brave New World

The Canadian Oxford Dictionary defines individual as:

1. Particular person: a particular person, distinct from others in a group.

2. Separable from others: singular and separable from others in a group or class.

Based on this definition, we can definitely affirm the Aldous Huxley, Brave New World society is not based on individualism. Our society is based of people with different point of views, emotions, feelings, and characters. This is what creates a real society, where everybody belongs to everyone else. In short, individual owes everything to society, but society in turn owes everything to individual (Book, Page).

Throughout the book, we can identify many themes that help us understand more what is really going in the story, and also why characters reacted in a certain way. In my opinion, the most predominant theme would be new technological and scientific developments that help us to reach a perfect world. Consummation and isolation are also other important themes easily identifiable in Brave New World.

The way they have organised this society is the one that people are never alone, so they can not think. Therefore, this result, for the lower cast, in a lost of individuality since they conditioned people to like certain things and do not let them decide for what they want. Leaders have decided to develop mass consumption so that people are conditioned to hate old things. Basically, they landed in a perfect world, which is what the main theme is all about. Leaders of the society agree that low people do not have to think.

One other major theme in the book is consummation of the Utopians. People hate to read books because they have been conditioned by the controller to hate it and not be alone. According to Mustapha, soma exists to “calm your anger, to reconcile you to your enemies, to make you patient and long-suffering … anybody can be virtuous now” (Huxley 217). This fact is directly related to the main theme (new technological and scientific developments that help us to reach a perfect world) since science has come up with a drug (soma) and people use it to become happy all the time and do not have any down side. Therefore, everyone does what they have to do with no complaints, which maintain stability at the same time and keeps people of that society happy. The main problem there is the fact that no one can become an individual since they conditioned people to do and to like what the leaders and the controller of the Utopian society wants. Then,

People in Brave New World are conditioned to hate being alone because being alone means handing-over questions, return on oneself and the values that are surrounding us.
