It was once said that we are a product of our environment, but with today's technology and media our environment does not make us who we have become. Sometimes the media brings our environment and other places to our TV's and C.D.'s. One example of this is gangster rap. This genre of music talks about everyday life in impoverished minority neighborhoods. Ironically, the majority of this markets' consumers are middle and upper class white youth. Beauty uses the same type of media in society. The media and fashion industry tells us what is hot and what is not. Society as a whole does not object to this measure, instead it tries to keep up with the latest trends and meet the criteria. Whoever said "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" could not have been more correct. What happens when everyone's eyes are influenced to see the same generalizations as beauty?
             The fashion industry and media have the power to sell an image to the public because they control our fundamental consumptions of influence. This is a verbose means of saying what we see and what we hear. An extreme way of looking at it is a continuous brain washing of what is acceptable and is not. At the end of the nineties the media told society their blueprint for luring us in: "Sex sells." This, being the new sensation for society, made it easier for us to learn our new standards of beauty. A beautiful woman today is thin and sexy. To be sexy you have to be fit and wear revealing clothes. Beauty means having sparkling, perfectly aligned teeth or dentures. Our standards of beauty will not be forgotten like the lectures in class because they are constantly repeated in commercials and the programs we watch.
             Entertainers and other celebrities are our biggest influence. They not only tell us what is beautiful, they also give us the criteria on fashion. My favorite rap artist, Jay-Z, has a lyric that says; "I tell you what type of car to buy/ what type of shoes...
