How to Get Rid of Racism: Communication
The movie, Remember the Titans, portrays many aspects of communication, and shows what good things can be accomplished between people who communicate well. Throughout the film many fields of communication are used to help the team deal with the many problems they face within the team and from other people which occur because of the fact that the team and school have been integrated and have both black and whites playing together on the same team. And, they also face numerous problems because the head coach of the football team is a black man, Coach Boone, who was given the job which caused the legendary white coach of the team to become an assistant. From the first day off camp in the summer the team had major communication problems. Though the team was integrated, the team was very much so segregated. The white players stuck with the white players and the black with the black. This was a problem because in order to be a good football team there must be good team chemistry where everyone trusts everyone. So, right away Coach Boone had to fix these problem and develop a communication climate that fostered closeness and trust between the black and white players. He did so by forcing each person to sit on the bus next to a person
This created a lose - lose situation in which if the team does not come together, not only does the team lose, but so does the coach. Throughout the rest of the movie the team is united with one goal in mind, to win the state title. The players are using an information-getting style interview so that they can find out about their teammate and get to know them better. Basically, he has made each player conduct their own interview. This automatically caused tension between the two and created several problems. If they did not get along and did not respect each other then they most likely would have not had won the state title, and this movie would have never been made. And, this happened in the state championship game when both coaches were doing poorly with their part of the team. However, for the majority of the team this did not work. They became a brainstorming group in which they tried to figure out how they could devise a scheme that would help them win the football game. They became friends, and when the rest of the team saw this, they forgot about the black and white issue and they finally came together, and were a "team". They communicated very little and stayed out of each other's way. And, although the team was very good despite the coach's differences, they could not accomplish their main goal of winning the state championship unless the two coaches settled their differences. Sure, in some ways he has helped the team come along, but the only way the team will completely come together is if the players learn to effectively communicate with people of different cultures. However, though the players have finally gotten along, the two coaches have not.
