Physical Journeys
There is a path that we as human beings, follow throughout our lives that divide and multiply, leaving us with not only opportunities, choices and decisions, but also obstacles and mazes. It is this path that helps us to become better acquainted with ourselves, as well as those around us. It also helps guide us towards the people we are today. It is through these paths that we journey to a place where we are able to understand ourselves and make decisions that will effect the rest of our journey called life. I have been chosen by my peers to represent my school at this Youth Forum where I will discuss with you the topic of 'life is a series of journeys'. Journeys are most generally described as moving from on point to another, which is commonly known as a physical journey, which occurs more often. However, there are also a number of other forms of journeys, in which we embark on in a number of ways. Inner journeys occur when an individual's emotions, feelings or thoughts are changed due to a physical journey of some kind. Another form of a journey is an imaginative journey, whereby; the individual uses his or her imagination to create this journey, which will occur in their mind. My name is Eryn McKellar and today I'll be discussing the concept of physical journeys and just how they are related to things around us. This poem is centred on the idea of immigration to a new country. This follows the same form as a journey as it represents a physical journey (eg. For all you listeners out there, I'm going to inform of just what a physical journey is and how it is seen through a number of related materials. This shows the emotion of the immigrants as it is referring to the train journeys taken back in Europe and other memories of their homes. Through displaying the concept of travelling to new lands as demonstrated through the journey of migration, we also witness the link of each of the travellers or migrants in the poems as they have travelled to a new land and is in an unfamiliar atmosphere. This is a technique used by the poet to present the concept of journey and just how journeys occur through time. It is through this that a series of journeys is shown as they are provided with these choices in which will determine their journey of life and therefore begins a series of journeys. 'Migrant Hostel' represents the hardship faced by the migrants as they waited in hostels before being found jobs and eventually assimilated into society.
