Inferno

Are you a fortune teller, a glutton, or violent against your neighbor? According to Dante's Inferno all of these things are sins and would earn you eternal damnation in one of the nine circles of Hell. Fortune tellers are punished in the eighth circle of Hell for their fraudulence. In life they practiced the forbidden art of divination and claimed to be able to predict the future. God is the only being capable of such power which is why it is very fitting that their punishment in Hell is to have their heads on backwards leading their bodies forever backwards through tear swollen eyes. Dante chooses Geryon to guard the souls of the fraudulent. Geryon has the body shape of a dragon, hairy arms, the tail of a scorpion, and the face of an honest man. His dragon like body symbolizes the reptilian nature of the fraudulent, his human face represe

Dante places the gluttons in the third circle of Hell where they lie swollen in a fetid slush while Cerberus, a three headed dog from classical mythology, stands guard over them. I find the way in which Dante organizes his sins and punishments to be like the old saying "What makes you laugh will also make you cry". In other words, what gives you pleasure in life may cause you suffering in Hell. Guarding the sins of violence is the Minotaur, which is yet again a creature from mythology. The fortune tellers, the gluttons, and the violent against neighbors are just a few of the sinners who are punished in Dante's Inferno. nts the trickery or falsity of a fraud, and his scorpion tail represents the sting felt by the victims of fraud. Plus the centaurs make excellent guards for these violent sinners because they were an extremely violent species from classical Greek mythology. Here they will be submerged in a boiling river of blood (Phlegethon) and those who try and raise themselves out of the torment of the boiling blood will be attacked by centaurs. Also just as they slobbered over food, Cerberus slobbers over them, ravenously tearing at them with his claws and teeth. In life gluttons did nothing but eat so in Hell they will be punished by having to lie bloated and swollen in a pit filled with excrement from their excessive eating. According to Dante those who are violent against their neighbors will be sent to the seventh circle of Hell. Dante places the fortune tellers in one of the deepest circles of Hell because of their abuse of human reason. Violence against neighbors falls into the category of sins of violence. Gluttony is a sin of incontinence, the least severe of the three major categories of sins found in Dante's Inferno, which is why they are place in one of the beginning circles of Hell. The Minotaur was a bloodthirsty half-man half-bull creature during his time on Earth so it is fitting that he guards the violent souls in Hell.
