Clockwork Orange

A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess- John Anthony Burgess Wilson was born in the year 1917 in Manchester into a Catholic middle-class family- studied at Xaverian College and Manchester University, where he read English language and literature, graduating in 1940.- During World War II Burgess served at the Royal Army Medical corps. - In 1942 he married Llwela Isherwood Jones, who died of alcoholic cirrhosis in 1968- Burgess first interest was music, he composed several works- In 1949 he wrote his first novel "A VISION OF BATTLEMENT"- In 1959 Burgess devoted himself entirely to writing, living since in Malta, Italy, US, and Monaco- In 1962 appeared his most famous science fiction fable


They beat up people without reason, rob houses, rape girls and steel everything they get. After two weeks of this treatment his body reacts with a sudden sickness to seeing violence and thinking about doing violence. In these two weeks he gets injected drugs and has to watch special movies of violence, murder, beating and rape. He is selected to participate in the Ludovic experiment, a method that changes a criminal into a righteous Christian in two weeks. At the end of the book he dreams about all sorts of violent acts while he listens to 9th Symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven. While the day he plays the "good kid", but at night he does all sorts of crimes with his gang. He is the leader of the gang and he acts extremely violent and brutal. His "friends" have enough of his leadership and trick Alex so he gets arrested by the police and charged for murder for 14 years of prison. While his hospital stay his body is changed back to normal. A smart young man of fifteen years, who still goes to school and has no social problems, who is well educated for his age and loves Beethoven. The plot of A Clockwork OrangeA Clockwork Orange is a utopian fiction about a future society. Subjects and style of the book- a special language that is supposed to be a slang in the future- the narrator talks to you in a direct way- a different type of criminal, the evil character, do person like Alex exist?- Can you change a person by medical methods?- Is it right to brainwash somebody to make him a good person?. The government offer him a good job and a place to stay, so they can clean their image. The government is strongly criticized, because of the Ludovic experiment.
