Is Americas Pastime on Dope? Are steroids a problem in Major League Baseball? Since the early 1980's MLB has wanted to test players for steroids. MLB and the players have not reached an agreement in the player's contract for MLB to have the right to test for steroids, and the players will go on strike if test were administered. The commissioner is faced with the problem of how to convince the athletes to agree to a new contract that allows testing for steroids. With new drugs and detox products coming on the market every day, there are no tests that can effectively detect every illegal substance. Players openly talk about using steroids, coaches know about steroids, and the MLB has provided voluntary failed tests to prove that the drugs are prevalent in the MLB. Yet nothing has been done to stop players in the MLB from taking steroids. The athletes involved believe that steroids will help produce more homeruns and better statistics which equals more money. The fans that agree with doping only want to see the homeruns and big numbers. If the owners want players to dope up for wins and salary that is their own affair, but when Americas Pastime is being erased by these same players I believe that they are obligated to help secure the integrity of baseball's past and what is to come. Steroids are also linked to the increase in muscle tears and injuries in MLB. Doping up to become a better athlete is cheating the players who are true to America's pastime by not cheating. y because it is also helping there paychecks. The extensive salaries, and pressure to perform, have only led to more steroid involvement in MLB. MLB needs athletes just as much as the athletes need the MLB. Anabolic steroids have numerous negative side effects which people using them try to see as a problem put off until later in life because steroids are only thought to cause cancer and long term effects. Even more shocking is that Caminiti told SI he would not discourage young players from taking steroids because of the monetary value assessed with producing big numbers in baseball. Steroids will continue to plague baseball until tests are administered, and stricter guidelines are implemented in MLB. Recent studies show that 5-7% of anonymous tests administered voluntarily by players came positive for steroids. The reality is that side effects of the substance can be seen as early as 4 weeks into the first use of the drugs with effects such as acne, and headaches. I just hope no more damaged is caused by then that is irreplaceable by the game that started of so innocent, and pure. If everyone turns their heads away from the problem of steroids for personal gain, baseball will never be the same. I believe that MLB needs to realize their control of power and focus on what is happening right now, rather than blowing the issue off for another year. Although this temporary fix on his body helped him out in the beginning, more and more cycles of juice only led to muscle tears and a career worth of steroid effected injuries.
