Ralph (also known as the fair-haired boy) is one of the older boys on the island who tries to do his best in the worst possible situations. He is thin and average height for his age, has fair hair and a scar on his for head from the plane crash. No one knows to much about Ralph’s past, the only thing known of his life prior to the island is that his father was an officer in the British navy. Ralph always tries to keep everyone together and organized but “The hunters” end up convincing mostly everyone to join their tribe Leaving Ralph, Piggy, Sam, and Eric “samneric” alone. Ralph only ally that lasts through most of the book is Piggy, although he some times teases him he feels responsible when he is killed by Jack.

The main conflict is staying alive until help comes to rescue them, or, man v nature or you could say (society v society) v nature, as both tribes were against each other while at the same time they were fighting nature for survival. She stood to give Ralph a comforting hug, but he pushed her away. "
Piggy spots a conch shell, and tells Ralph how to use it to make a noise. Another tribal dance is formed, with a boy named Robert as the Pig. The officer is told that two boys were killed, and everyone is taken to a Navy cruiser. Another boulder is rolled down, but misses smashing Ralph. With that he just looked of at the cruiser in the distance.
Ralph couldn't remember how he got there, but the next thing he knew Angela was closing the door to her small apartment. He laughs at their request to return the specs, and a fight ensues. He doesn’t approve when Ralph is made chief, so later on he turns a revolt on Ralph and all but three older kids and a few little kids leave Ralph to join “the hunters”, what Jack calls his tribe. She sighed once again and continued.
