Media, The New Blame
"Media is the new evil of the world. It is the reason people are provoked to perform violent crimes." This is a statement said by many American adults, most of the time without adequate knowledge about the subject. If they knew the facts, would they still say the same thing? Although it is a personal decision, generally speaking, media is to blame for violent crimes. There are a lot of facts supporting that media is to blame for provoking individuals into committing violent crimes. For instance, the more T.V. that a child watches, the less that he/she is disturbed by violent acts; it also shows that by the age of 18, the average person will have seen about 18,000 violent acts. Studies show that about 20 violent acts appear on children's TV shows every hour. Children who see violence on TV are more likely to think that the world is a dangerous place, act violently against others, have less patience, or even leave objectives unfinished. There have been over 3,000 studies performed to prove a connection between media and violence. Most of them have been successful in showing some connection but not directly related ("Violence On Television 1") (Fanning 1).Violence has bean a form of entertainment long before mode
Woods 4Though there have not been any major laws passed for media restriction, it seems though it could be rather soon (Calvert 1). Some action is already being put into process. For example, in Arizona, state legislators have already made three proposals to limit children's use of the World Wide Web. The long-term effect of kids viewing such violence has inspired arson, injuries, and even murders among children and teenagers. The television, radio, and Internet only make it more accessible and common, and bring it straight into American homes night after night. Teens use suicide as a quick solution to a problem that may arise in their lives, and television rarely shows real-life consequences of suicide. There are many ways to protect children from media violence. Not only is violence depicted in the media, but sex and drugs are also seen. Overdoses are very often which can result in death, and there have been cases where people deliberately overdose as a way to commit suicide (Violence on U. Many people absorb this violence and apply it in real-life to harm others. The media is only concerned with what sells, and how to boost ratings (Young 2). If not controlled, the effects look as if they are only getting worse.
