Ancient greece

Why is ancient Greece so focused upon in not only our study of history, but in our society as a whole? They were not the first civilized society. The Sumerians predated the Greeks by two thousand years. The reason ancient Greece is so important in our culture is because they were the first people to look at the world and mankind the way we do. Ancient Greece had groundbreaking accomplishment in government, education, science, culture, and the arts. But were these accomplishments overshadowed by the negative aspects of Greek life? Was Greek life in reality the golden age we are told it was?

This shows that the Greeks had great minds and were great thinkers. An example of a Greek city state that was governed by an oligarchy is Corinth. An oligarchy also leaves the door open for other citizens to have a chance to join the political process. In the past if someone got sick or there was horrible flooding the ancient people would look to the gods for answers. Though many city states considered themselves democracies they were indeed oligarchies, much like the United States government of today. In an oligarchy the citizens that wanted to and had the time would make the decisions. The Greeks were very curious people. In theory this from of government allows for decisions to be made in a timely manner with the will of the people in mind. ifferent city states with their on governments. The majority of Greeks preferred this form of government. This is a prime example of how, in regards to government, the ancient Greeks were paving the way for future governments, including our own, way before there time. It provided stability in the polis and allowed social mobility. While each city state had their own monarchy, aristocracy, oligarchy, or democracy government; most city states were either democracies or oligarchies. Later the University of Athens was founded which is still a major university to this day.
