Sociology: Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, and Peter Berger

as to distinguish his sociology from other fields, particularly psychology. He also wanted to be known as a scientist in this new discipline. Durkheim found a way to link sociology and science by applying a key part of all sciences-the scientific method to his sociology. The scientific method is a process by which scientists attempt to produce an accurate understanding of phenomena. Its basic steps include observation, formulation of a hypothesis, predictions based on the hypothesis, and modifications of the hypothesis to more adequately describe the obtained results. Durkheim was able to perform these tasks in his book Suicide by using an "argument of elimination" to observe various aspects of European society and using these aspects to create a classification system consisting of four different types of suicide.
