Basic Training

             The United States Armed Forces is the most powerful military in the world. Keeping that reputation, the military must start by training the new recruits to the highest standards. Those standards begin by going through Basic Training. "There is nothing more important to a soldier's future than Basic Training. Basic Training sets the tone of the Army and establishes the standards that soldiers will follow throughout their carrers, (Pelton)." Basic Training is the first step in the process of learning what it means to be a soldier in the United States Armed Forces. The conversion from a civilian life to a military life will potentially be the most difficult and rewarding experience of a person's life. The development to becoming a soldier consists of becoming physically fit, self-confident, and willing and able to tackle anything that comes his/her way.
             Being physically fit is the military top priority in the conversion from civilian life to becoming a soldier in the armed forces. Most recruits before joining the military are overweight and are not in shape. Recruits must pass a physical test to see if they are ready for the challenges of basic training. The recruits will be given an initial test to see if they can pass the physical training screening. "The women must do three push-ups and 17 sit-ups and run one mile in less than 11 minutes. The men have to do 13 push-ups and 17 sit-ups and complete the one-mile run in less than eight minutes, and 30 seconds (Smith)." If a recruit fails this test, he/she will go to the Fitness Training Company for one to three weeks of intensive physical training. Most recruits have more trouble with the running because coming from the civilian life, most never train to run on their own.
