1984 or 9/11?

             George Orwell's 1984 is a more accurate description of the modern United States of America than most people would like to believe. Cameras on the streets in Washington D.C. and at supermarkets and Superbowls are not the problem. Instead, we refuse to accept the Ministry of Truth exists and we pay for it everyday. But someone is doing Winston's job of writing newspeak and if we don't confront our Ministry of Truth we'll end up with Orwell's, sliding further into his dystopia.
             The primary correlation between 1984 and our country is the distribution of information by the governments. We may fool ourselves by having a constitutionally guaranteed free press and other civil liberties, but our very own Big Brother is still choosing what trickles down. Though there's no agency called the Ministry of Truth, we now have the Office of Strategic Influence whose job is the spreading of disinformation1, created shortly after the terrorists' actions of September 11th.
             Pushing these Offices and Ministries aside, someone more optimistic should quickly attack my argument because the Freedom of Information Act of 1974 lets us delve into the depths of our country's catacombs, doesn't it? While a good portion of my class wrote I-Searches on interior decorating2, I tackled the subject of intellectual freedom in an attempt to prove to myself that everything was really okay. And while those classmates concluded that interior decorating pays an intolerable wage if you're accustomed to living on Alameda Ridge, I concluded that our country is in an intolerable state of disarray. Our country is a pyramid structure and the free marketplace of ideas is at the bottom. We're in a state of disarray, however, because the government is not bothering to support itself by reinforcing its base. The government itself doesn't want to push us to 1984, though.
