Working in highschool
My senior year I participated in a very popular early release program called CBE. It was a work study program that seniors could participate in so they could leave after our fourth period class. Our teacher would visit us at our job and in class she would teach us skills that would help us with any job that we would have for the rest of our life. This experience has only made me feel even stronger about the benefits for student working in high school. Having a job in high school can teach you and help you with essential skills for life. Working will help you save for college when it is most needed. Working will also keep kids busy and out of trouble rather than going out and partying. The advantages and the habits that are learned early from working in high school greatly out weigh any disadvantages from having a job and going to school. Saving money is a skill that kids need to learn young. Working in high school will help you start saving for college. It is very important to have a savings when you enter college because most first year college students do not have jobs and need to have some sort of cash. No one can life off their parents forever and it is better for kids to start saving early to get
a savings account incase the need it later in life. If a student is working every Friday or Saturday it will give them less time to party and get in trouble with friends. Working kept me busy and out of some trouble that I could have been in. Students have to take responsibility to do their school work because life does not get easier as kids get older so they might as well learn how to be responsible and take care of themselves when they still have the safety nets known as their parents. Do not take me wrong I think that hanging out with friends in high school is very important, but I think when a student has too much free time on their hands is when they start to get in trouble. If the grades really do slip, parents can just tell the student to work fewer hours, quit all together, or work on time management and help them through it. The less free time they have the less likely they are to get in trouble. Some parents think that if a student gets a job in high school their grades will drop and they will not be able to get in to a good college. If a student knows that they have to be at work at five and they have math homework to do; the student needs to sit down and do it before they have to go to work so they can still get a good nights sleep. It will help kids learn how to manage their time properly. The sooner a savings account is started the money will be in it and you will be much more secure in the future. For example, if when I was in high school I got a job at as a veterinary assistant and went to school to become a vet, I would have already made a contact and learned skills I would need to go out in the real world. The earlier a student learns time management, the stronger the habit is. Working in high school can teach students at a young age the important life lessons that need to be learned to be a successful businesses person yet they will still have the comfort of someone to fall back on if things go wrong.
