Plot of Young Goodman Brown
The story of Young Goodman Brown was a complex story about a man and his beliefs on heaven and sin. Bizarre in it's storyline, it nonetheless, is a very readable piece.Young Goodman Brown is a newly married (just three months) devout man. He prides himself on his rightiousness and his pristine family values. He speaks glowingly of his family history and the lack of disturbing acts contained within it.Young Goodman Brown married a woman named Faith. She is described as having pink ribbons in her hair. This brings to mind a fresh faced innocent, un-worldly child. She is the very definition of sinlessness. They are devoutly in love. Brown has to leave her for the evening to do something he is
The reason for his leaving was sketchy and never really explained - just that he had something he must do. He learns that his perfect wife is also going to be inducted and this disturbs him greatly. Amongst the burning tree's akin to Moses' burning bushes, Goodman Brown comes to his senses. Even Brown's catechism teacher shows up in the story as a witch. The story unfolds that he is going to be inducted into this secret society (although we are never told why). He speaks of the sinds all of these rightious and pious people have committed. Stories are told about sins his own family committed. His happy life is marred by the whole incident. He is represented as someone who knows Brown, his whole family, and most everyone else Brown knows. He now believes they are all evil and just play parts to seem clear of sin. Brown is told that everyone he thought was clean of sin are all seething in it. His preacher - Deacon Gookin is also depicted as less than pristine. He shouts out to his wife to fight the evil around her. Unable to be sure he wasn't dreaming, Goodman Brown distrusts everyones station and standing in life.
