Anthrax

Anthrax is caused by the spore forming bacterium 'Bacillis Anthracis'. These spores cause an acute infectious disease. 'Bacillis Anthracis' is a natural bacterium most commonly found in the wild and in domestic farm animals (cattle, sheep, goats, and some other herbivores). It also occurs in humans when they are exposed to the infected tissue of the animals.
Anthrax is becoming a current issue because it is considered to be a potential substance that could be used as a weapon in biological warfare. A mandatory vaccination of all active military personnel, which might be involved with this problem, has been started. This has been started by the D.O.D. (Department of Defense).
The most common place where anthrax is found is in large agricultural regions where it occurs in animals. The places where it is most common are, South and Central America, Southern and Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and the Middle East. When humans get anthrax, it is usually because of they are working around the infected animals or infected meat.
The anthrax infection has three different forms, cutaneous (skin), inhalation, and intestinal. Anthrax spores can live in soil for many years and humans can be infected with it by handling infected animal products, by inhaling the spores from contaminated animals or their products, or by eating infected meat that is undercooked. In the United States and Canada it is rare to find infected animals.
Symptoms of an anthrax infection usually occur within a seven day period and the symptoms are different depending on how the person got it. Cutaneous is the most common type with about 95% of the infections. This type is caused when the spores enter a cut on the skin when handling contaminated animal products. This causes the skin to get itchy and bumpy and it might look like a bug bite. After 1 or 2 days it will turn into a painless ulcer with a black dying area in the middle.
