Adam and Eve
Many people have had the dream; the one where they leave for work, school, or any other public place, only to realize that they forgot to put on some clothing. They then run, in shame and embarrassment, to the nearest hiding place. People seem to have an innate fear of being naked, and so they cover their bodies, some more so than others, so that no one can see what lies beneath. Adam and Eve were the first to experience this self consciousness. They had lived in the Garden of Eden for some time in a state of ignorant bliss, until they ate of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. In convincing Eve that she could eat the fruit, the serpent said "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil" (Genesis 3:5). Eve wanted to know this Godly wisdom. In an attempt to become more like God, Adam and Eve ate of the Tree of Knowledge. In doing so, however, they came to see how far they actually were from being gods, and ran to hide the things which linked them the most to the earthly world; their bodies. When God created Eve in Genesis 2, she and Adam had no shame with respect to their nakedness. "And the man and his wife were both naked, and were not ashamed" (Genesis 2:25).
This fact brought disgrace to Adam and Eve. These bodies resembled those of the animals, with reproductive organs and earthly aspects, which God had no use for. She and Adam ate of the tree, and "the eyes of both were opened. This does not mean that they literally "opened their eyes," but that they could see the world more clearly. They did not hide because they feared that God was angry that they ate from the tree, but Adam said ". Although this would have brought them one step closer to being divine, they never would have achieved the status of God. Even after the fall of Adam and Eve, God did not leave them. They were ashamed of their nakedness, and did not want God to see what linked them to the realm of animals. Before sending them away, "the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins, and clothed them" (Genesis 3:21). Luckily for us, God is a God of change and love. sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons" (Genesis 3:7).
