Illinois Institute of Technology

             Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) is one of the seventeen institutions in the Association of Independent Technological Universities (AITU). IIT has undergraduate programs in architecture, engineering, humanities, psychology, and science. One of the main reasons I chose this college was because IIT has a good architectural program. IIT includes 6 different main colleges based on different degrees. There are more than 6,000 students at IIT and most of the classes have 20 people or less. Of the students, 25% are women and 75% are men. Illinois Institute of Technology undergraduate programs, benefits, and requirements (Peterson's 2003, pp.275).
             IIT was founded in 1890. Two independent colleges, Armour Institute of Technology and Lewis Institute, formed to make IIT. Stuart School of Business was added in 1969. In 1986, Midwest College of Engineering joined the university. The famous main campus was developed by one of the most influential architects of the century, Ludwig Miles van der Rohe, who was the director of IIT's College of Architecture for twenty years. IIT Research Institute has a research volume of $130 million annually. Some current research topics are aerospace, polymer science and recycling, and food safety and technology. The Research Institute is located in many places throughout the U.S. The university has four campuses in the area of Chicago. There is also a National Center for Food Safety and Technology that seeks to improve the quality of the nation's food supply (Petersons.com).
             IIT is located in Chicago, about 1 block from the White Sox ballpark and 3 miles South of the Chicago Loop. There is an IIT minibus that provides free transportation on weekdays between campus and the university's downtown center. There are also a number of convenient recreational areas, including Lincoln Park Zoo, Grant Park, Soldier Field, and lakefront beaches (Petersons.com).
