Sir Gawain and the Green Knight compared to Beowulf
In Beowulf and in Gawain and the Green Knight both hero's posses similar as well as different characteristics. The two stories are set in very different times, but regardless of the large chronological gap physically the two men contain similar attributes. Psychologically is where they separate themselves from one another. The motivations behind their actions are located in two totally different situations. They differ greatly and diverge the two men on very different paths. It is there motives and feelings within their courarge, loyalty, arrogance and honor that surface as the variance within both heroes. Beowulf's first fights come about in defense of his people and people who are being terrorized by the monster Grendel. Beowulf was repaying the king and doing his duty in aiding the terrorized Danes. Beowulf later goes on to defeat a dragon in order to save his people. Beowulf was the protector of his people, their first and only line of defense against the evil monsters of the world. The classic Anglo-Saxon hero's main duties are that of protector and defender of their people. Beowulf is no different. He is glorified for being strong, victorious, and of high status. The two heroes in both these stories seem very similar on a first glace, due to their similar physical attributes and there courage and loyalty to those they care about. The similarities to Christ and his sacrifice for his people are very evident. The greatest shame is to die before your king does. Gawain is courageous because he fears death but he is willing to face it anyway. His arrogance is extremely evident. Upon further inspection you see that especially psychologically they are very different people in very different times. Both stories start with challenges and tests of the hero's courage and loyalty. Gawain's motivation is to stay loyal to Arthur. ut he does his deeds for his people and the glory that it brings to him. The romance hero and his chivalric code is much more centered on God than that of the Anglo Saxon hero. Then as the stories progress they spilt. Beowulf is fearless, and has a sort of blind courage. He never cares if he is alone or not; as if he knew he was meant to die in battle defending his people. Beowulf thanks God for his battle victories, but unlike Gawain was a Christian knight; anytime trouble arose prayer was his first solution. Whereas Gawain displays courage by standing up for his King, yet there is always an element of fear in his thoughts and actions.
