FCC and regulations on music

Or so we're told" (Eminem). The words of a famous rapper Eminem in "White America" from his newly released record. Eminem is one of the latest artists being attacked by the Federal Communications Commission. Along with many other musical artists, Eminem fights back with his lyrics and protests against the FCC for trying not to allow him to exercise his rights to the first amendment. The FCC is regulating music, and they are trying to make it a world where we are told what to play, sing, and even what we listen to. Just like many other countries the United States is being threatened by censorship on music (What is Music). Music is a way to freely express ideas. A songwriter may be expressing anger or love in a song. To the artist, music is a form of therapy. Musicians have been tortured, put in jail, exiled, and in some cases, killed, but music is being censored because " censorship is based on fear."
The fifty states, District of Columbia, and U. A Christian group DeGarmo & Key had their video "Six, Six, Six" banned by channels because it showed to much violence. The government tries to not look like suck bad guys and let the people know that even though they censor a lot of different kinds of music, they still use music to help with the government. Senator McCain wants the 21st Century Media Responsibility Act of 1999 to include music as well as tobacco (Nuzum). Sometimes the cases against the first amendment are taken out of proportion. The FCC has done their job on censoring music. In 1985, the music industry and PMRC came to an agreement and started a program for record companies to place a " Parental Advisory Label" on certain records, to inform listeners, and serve as warning (About Music). In his act he said the seven words, including shit, piss fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker and tits (George Carlin). Senator Sam Brownback wants production on Marilyn Manson records to stop. Later that year two more major issues came up relating to music. First Lady Nancy Reagan no longer supported an eleven-hour anti-drug rock show in 1986 because the sponsors had bands that did not support the ant-drug theme.
