Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD)
While drugs have existed for many years LSD is one of the most well known used drugs in the world today. LSD's technical term is lysergic acid diethylamide and it falls into the group of drugs known as hallucinogens or psychedelics. These groups of drugs may cause harm to a persons central nervous system. LSD is found in ergot, a fungus that grows on rye, wheat, and other grains. The first individual to discover this drug was a man by the name of Dr. Albert Hofmann, a Swiss chemist working for Sandoz Pharmaceutical, a chemical company. In 1938 he was working in his lab trying to find new medications to relieve headache pain. Dr. Hofmann was working with the ergot fungus and he made a new chemical which he called LSD. While he was working with his new creation he accidentally ingested a small amount of the drug and he began to experience the effects of this drug. In a report subsequently filed with Author Stoll, his immediate superior, Hofmann described his hallucination as " an uninterrupted stream of fantastic images of extraordinary plasticity and vividness and accompanied by an intense kaleidoscope play of colors" (Steven 4). This cause many of the users to go to the hospital or committed to a mental institute. A person maybe sitting at work years later and experience the feeling they felt when they tripped from those years back. Some LSD users actually enjoy the their flashbacks and look at them as a "free trip. Flashbacks can last from a few seconds to several hours. The people would eat the bread and begin to trip but during those times they weren't aware of the drug and it effects. Researcher Larry Chait said "because their personalities haven't developed well enough to know how to handle altered stated of consciousness" ( Littell 16). " As a result of my research paper I have learned the effects that consuming a drug can leave you with long term effects and the short term effect really lead into serious problem as well. One trip can lead to long-term effects. Flashbacks are a long-term effect from this drug. LSD can change your life and leave you with horrible flashbacks that can frighten you to death. LSD can decrease the ability to pay attention, concentrate, and remember. Studies have shown that children in eighth grade are beginning to use LSD. The symptoms of LSD are usually hallucinations which includes seeing, hearing and feeling things that are not real. The fact that these reactions go beyond occasional flashbacks into lasting problems has led to the use of a new psychiatric term to describe them: "post-hallucinogen perceptual disorder" (Little 31). Some LSD users experience severe, terrifying thoughts and feeling, fear of losing control, fear of insanity and death, and despair while using LSD (Nida).
