The actions of Robspeirre in the Enlightenment

             I believe that the statements and actions of Robespierre are a departure from the ideas of the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment. In my opinion the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment were a time where science and curiosity flourished. The Scientific Revolution drastically changed humanity's course. The Enlightenment weakened its hold of superstition on people and encouraged them to think of new ways to do things. Robespierre is an opposite of this view point considering during the Reign of Terror curiosity ultimately killed the cat.
             "All that is required for this enlightenment is freedom; and particularly the least harmful of all that may be called freedom, namely, the freedom for man to make public use of his reason in all matters. {3, Kant, 55} Enlightenment thinkers had many ideas that included encouragement of the spread of reason, and human rights such as freedom of the press. The spread of reason was in hopes to bring a difference to the lives of the people around the world. Philosophers used the natural science discoveries to show that nature was a focal point in the study of reason and its link to the human world. The philosopher's goal was to make a change in public viewpoint and to make reason an accessible tool for public knowledge. Enlightenment philosophers also took part in the fight for natural human rights. Human rights in regards to religion and politics were a thought that most enlightenment philosophers fought heavily for. These philosophers also sought to rid slavery and to find more humane in the management of criminals. Human rights were an issue that even the French government addressed in the Declaration of the Rights of Man by stating "the law is an expression of the will of the community. All citizens have a right to concur, either personally, or by their representatives, in formation. {4, National Assembly of France, 106}" The Declaration of the Rights of Man
