Thoreu's Opinion of a Successful Society

"that so long as the interest of the whole society requires it, that is, so long as the established government cannot be resisted or changed without public inconveniency, it is the will of God, that the established government be obeyed"
In order for a successful society to exist, there must be some form of government or authority to be obeyed by the citizens of that society.
Society has shown that it needs an authority figure, or a "big brother", to look over it for a sense of security. Individuals are not comfortable on acting upon their consciences. Instead, they find it to be much easier just to abide by the government rather than question it. People are likely to serve the devil as God because of their impulses to obey any leader, good or bad. The inclination to obey is based on the fear of dealing with consequences when taking any responsibility. It is so much simpler to have decisions made by the government rather than using one's own judgments and risk dealing with the penalties.
Individuals who disobey are considered a threat to our sense of security. Any non-conformists who resolve to think and act by their principles are believed to be resisting the state and are regarded as criminals, outcasts, and enemies. The consequences devised by the government are so vile that they not only brutalize the individual, but they brutalize the society as a whole by forcing citizens to comply with the authority rule out of fear of the state's barbaric solution to rebellion. This is why the individual is so eager to conform even though it is not to their advantage.
Society does not want to be inconvenienced by challenging the government and risking chaos. Any form chaos would take from the sense of comfort and security that exists in a society. That is why the social order requires all of its citizens to obey to such a suppressing government.
