How Can an Educational institution such as NUS Promote Knowl

'Struggling in the era of explosion of information, how schools manage what they give today?' posed by Thomas H. Davenport, the senior professor of Harvard University. In most of the institutions and universities, the traditional ways of managing staff, students, resources and knowledge seem to be no more suitable for today's context, as they are unable to cope with the large amount of information in an organized manner any more. Therefore a novel concept, Knowledge Management (KM), has evolved to facilitate learning, research and innovation. Basically, KM is a combination of using technology and changing university culture to benefit the teaching staff and students by providing them with new ways to share and disseminate information with improved efficiency and accuracy. The National University of Singapore (NUS), as one of the most prestigious universities in Asia, has tried very hard to promote KM in the campus, mainly by means of implementation of the school intranet, incentives, mentorship and projects, and the results have been quite satisfying so far.NUS has set up school intranet to facilitate the sharing of academic resources, because Information Technology has been proved as one of important roles to implement KM. Wi

Also, free vouchers, book grants, free lockers and free quota of photocopies will be given out to the students who have made selfless contribution to the study of their fellow students. The students' mentor, who will then produce progress reports for them periodically, monitors both of their academic and non-academic matters. Planning, discussions, conducting surveys, interviews and writing reports are usually involved to lead a project to a success. Hence, KM is strengthened with the assistance of information and communication technologies in NUS. All in all, KM has brought great benefits to both staff and students in NUS. To make the learning process more interesting, NUS has also introduced projects to students, and this is another good practice of KM in NUS. Projects are academic researches that help students to broaden their mindsets by exposing them to the knowledge outside the classroom. People of similar age tend to have more common language and experiences with each other, so it is really a good idea to have the seniors helping the juniors during their initial period of time in the university. This is shown by active participation of students in IVLE system, which is a part of KM implementation as well. Therefore in the whole process, cooperation between group members and their active participation are needed. th the technology in practice, many channels have been opened for students and staff to exchange and to explore resources. By doing projects, students are trained to be more innovative and creative. Moreover, in order to further promote KM, NUS decides to give incentives to the students who make use of the KM systems, like the discussion forums in IVLE system by awarding them marks. With a private account, each student is able to access the school intranet and personalize their own study plan, and the contents of courses would be updated there.
