Negative Aspects of Chat Communication

If I cited some lines from any chat room conversation, it would look like an extract from an absurd play of some new modern writer. But actually, participants of such conversations are not only real, but also mostly normal people. Thus, chat is an online communication with different people in real time. To log in to any chat room a person should have a nickname (screen name, or “nick”) and a password. Some chats require additional registration information, for others having a screen name is enough. Then the procedure is very simple: pick up a name or names you want to address to and type your messages.

Though it is very interesting and exciting to meet different people via chat rooms, people should realize the possible negative aspects, and even danger, of such communication. It can be false identity, misunderstanding, addiction, etc.

The main drawback of chat communication is that people cannot see each other and don’t actually know each other. Due to chat anonymity, a lot of chat participants play with their identity. For example, a man talking with a teenage girl may pretend to be of the same age as she is, and easily get into her mind thanks to his experience. God knows what might happen then. For kids communication in chat

. . .

They had pretty long virtual affair, realizing how much in common they had. A man and a woman, both being recently divorced and lonely, met each other in a chat room. That’s why there are so many disappointments, when people decide to meet. It’s not a secret that there are a lot of cases of child molestation in nowadays.

To avoid any danger and possible disappointments, people should always remember that online participants are not always sincere. “The end decision is yours,” says criminologist Wayne Petherick, “but you have to ask yourself whether you truly know the person.

It should be noted, that now chatters try to use different means for better understanding: face images (for smile - , anger - , laugh - ), capitalization (for higher voice), but there are still more chances to be misunderstood. Virtual communication does not have these advantages. There even can happen a delay in their personal development, because very often other aspects of life and time spending become out of their interest. When you talk to people in real life, you hear their voices and intonations; you have eye contact and other non-verbal aspects of communication.

In connection with that, I remember a story published a couple of years ago.
