The Scarlet Letter
The Scarlet Letter Hester Prynn was strong. She was strong enough to board a strange ship sailing to a new world. She was strong enough to actually be hopeful, to really believe in a chance. That, in my own opinion, is a rare thing indeed. Hester plays the e in Nathaniel Hawthorne's great American classic, The Scarlet Letter. Published in 1850, The Scarlet Letter tells a story of passion, hope, and tragic misunderstanding. Set against the harsh background of new founded America, the story puts it's focus on a young women named Hester Prynn. With her youth and beauty, Hester comes across the rough waters from England with the hope of starting a new and better life in young America. Upon her arrival, Things are not exactly what she expected. The residents of the town seem a little to ordered. They seem almost chained at the neck by the local laws and strict religious tradition, which was brought from England. All the men and women seem to know their exact place and function in society, and seem very comfortable in their organized daily routines. Most of the women are married, which seems very expected by the community, and they all fall comfortably into the stereotype of the ave
Here was a woman who could disrupt everything that they thought necessary. Roger Chillingworth never gets his revenge, and Hester seems to find a light at the end of the tunnel. She presents herself with a kind of my way or no way attitude. It attempts to explain the unexplainable. This way, the fear of the people could somehow be calmed of the threat that Hester represented. The men are so obsessed with their different emotions that it actually begins to kill them. He takes them into to his arms and begs for mercy, but it is to late. Through the story, the reader watches as both men physically deteriorate into weak and dying men. Hester dressed Pearl in a very over the top way. As little Pearl grows up, it's obvious to see that she is not an ordinary child. She came into their home with an understanding of the world. He is thought to be , but since no proof of his can be found, Hester is, by law, still married.
