First Great Awakening
The First Great Awakening was an immense religious revival in the English colonies. The Puritan churchgoers, especially, became bored with sermons that were too complex and dull for them to understand or care about. Worshippers began to question the churches beliefs. This event was extremely important to the people and united them together for the first time, moving the colonists closer to the war for independence. However, not everyone was happy with the new style of religion. Also, Jacobus Arminius preached that there was no such thing as predestination, and he believed that a person's use of free will determined their fate. " Many religions split due to disagreements, and these divisions in many of the denominations increased the number of churchgoers and competitiveness. This was an important step toward the uniting of the colonies and the thought of revolution. Orthodox clergymen, called "old lights," did not agree with the exciting and comical antics of the new preachers, called "new lights. New missions among the Indians and slaves were set up to get more followers. Four years after Edwards, Englishman George Whitefield began a new style of preaching. The colonies soon became united under the revival; they began calling themselves Americans for the first time. Many "new light" centers were founded, such as Princeton, Brown, Rutgers, and Dartmouth. The First Great Awakening really helped the colonists to see their similarities instead of their differences, causing them to unite, and they began to realize their right of independence. Many imitators began to preach like Whitefield. The 1730s and 40s was a great time for America. He had an amazing ability to deliver speeches to the point where even Edwards began to cry. At this time the First Great Awakening swept through the colonies.
