Revenge Tragedy Essay
A creation compensated by the labelling of texts within a particular genre indubitably interferes with an interpreter's appreciation of a composer's composition. The numerous ways of pursuing revenge all manifest different paths of creation and consequently devise different interpretations creators seek to be expropriated from their texts. Dramatic texts such as Medea, The Revengers Tragedy and High Noon, all deal with revenge tragedy in variant ways hence fabricating numerous responses and appropriations by various interpreters. The labelling of a text within a genre isolates the text and in turn diminishes the author's capability to effectively communicate and construct an ambiguous text amenable to multiple interpretations.Medea being a dramatic text empowers various attributes overt to various interpretations and criticisms. Being a play, it conjures up appropriations from its audience. The protagonist Medea can be decoded as being a victim of the patriarchy. No modern audience can watch Medea without seeing in it a frightening case study used by feminists to attack the patriarchy. Needless to say, few would commend Medea for her solution to the injustice she faces, but her right to be outraged is in no doubt at all. Since
I had to bring in drama, I had to bring in women, I had to bring in beauty and whatever I feel added quality to it" suggests the importance of the removal of a set interpretation within a genre. We can only deduce from this that his position in Corinth is by no means assured. The concealed tragedy within this text reveals itself through unconventional ways manifesting numerous interpretations leading towards the inevitable outcome. Thus the tragedy of Miller's death widens the audience's response which consequently embodies the creator's achievements. He was brave, loyal, and intelligent, but he couldn't move on past one thing, which led to his death. He used Medea to gain the Golden Fleece, and then rewrote history to his own satisfaction, seeing it as his own achievement. Lei Mubai embodies the character of justice. He sees the children as his "the two sons I begot", leaving Medea to that ghastly recourse to child murder. As proclaimed by Francis Bacon "This is certain, that a man that studieth revenge keeps his own wounds green, which otherwise would heal and do well. Certainly his attitudes would find little acceptance among a modern audience. Jason had brought home a disrespectable wife from the barbarous east. A complete lack of human emotion is clearly evident within this dramatic piece. Jason seems a thoroughly contemptible character. A multi-faceted view approachable by a reader can only exist without the presence of labelling and the narrow minded view of a conventional approach to the genre. The text can be interpreted as both a loving homage and a redemption of the alleged excesses of the Hong Kong martial arts movie, a questionable approach since excess - in the larger-than-life characters, stylized violence, and dazzling shifts of tone - is a primary lure of this film.
