Napoleon
Washington- does not want to run for President but people convince him that the country needs him. He's seen as a hero and no one questions the respect he commands. He did not have wooden teeth, contrary to popular belief, nor chop down the cherry tree. He did marry his wife, Martha Washington for her money. Anyway he agrees to run and he wins. He serves two terms from 1789-1797.-Washington ran the country very well and chose to uphold the Constitution well also. He did not want to go to rule as if he was a king. He stayed true to the Constitution and the people's rights. John Adams- is the first Vice President of the United States. Bill of Rights- the first 10 amendments were passed in 1791.Whiskey Rebellion-1791-was a test of the federal government's ability to enforce it's laws. Congress passes a tax on whiskey and far away farmers do not want to abide by it. Washington enforces the law with an army. This rebellion was never a serious military threat-it just proved that federalism could enforce the laws. 1793-France and England were at war with one another and France asks America for help. Washington denies to aid France because King Louie was beheaded and the alliance is now over.
This becomes a tradition for all future Presidents and continues still today. Midnight Appointments-Adams is mad at losing the election. France understood and did not hold a grudge. Proclamation of Neutrality-issued by Washington stating America is neutral to the war of France vs. Alexander Hamilton (chapter 7) steps in because he knows Burr and Jefferson. France tries to board the American ships to check to see if we are giving supplies to England and the two ships fire at one another. Alien and Sedition Acts- Passed by Adams because he feels this is an emergency. Farewell Address- before Washington leaves his Presidency he wants to speak to the people. This was just small squirmishes on the open seas with France. He got very upset when not everyone followed his orders or disagreed with them. The British are granted permission to check American ships. What we did get out of the deal was that England had to leave North America and getting them away from our land prevented future attack and war. Adams does not even go to Jefferson's Inauguration. Chapter 9Election of 1800- Adams loses because he did not want to go to war with France and the public did.
