A gold rush happens when people hear that gold hasbeen found. They then rush to seek their fortune. Goldis a soft, yellow precious metal that is veryvaluable. Some people use gold as money. TheCalifornia Gold Rush is very famous. Thousands ofpeople moved to California after James Marshall atSutter's Mill found gold on January 24, 1848. Althoughit took a year for the news to reach the east coast,by 1849 thousands of 'forty-niners' were mining forgold. Most miners used a shallow pan to find flakes ofAlthough there have been many gold rushes, theCalifornia Gold Rush brought over 200,000 new peopleto California in just a few years. Most miners wenthome broke. Freighters and merchants who brought andmarketed supplies made the real money. Levi Straus'struck it rich' by making and selling durable pants.
