The Scarlet Letter

In Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel, The Scarlet Letter, two main characters Arthur Dimmesdale and Roger Chillingworth both have secrets though each suffers different consequences for their sins. Secrets are those that are kept from the public to hide guilt, shame, revenge, hate, and love. Consequences happen naturally from an action perhaps a secret. Sins occur around the world but usually people don't get hurt from them but this case is different. Chillingworth on the other hand does not die free of guiltiness. Secrets can come back to haunt them in suffering or strength. The good thing is that he dies free of guiltiness because of his confession. "Nothing was more remarkable than the changes which took place, almost immediately after Mr. English by birth, but who had long dwelt in Amsterdam, whence, some good time agone, he was minded to cross over and cast in his lot with us of the Massachusetts. Chillingworth is an old physician who hides his identity and is also respected in the community. " Roger becomes like Dimmesdale getting weaker and weaker. Chillingworth use to be Master Prynne but changed his name so he wouldn't be embarrassed by Hester. Dimmesdale's secret closet, under lock and key, there was a bloody scourage. Dimmesdale suffers horribly with the guilt and pain inside his body.
