Junior College vs. University

A first-time freshman making a decision about whether to attend a Junior College or a State University faces many important considerations. While there are obvious similarities such as the educated and professional staff, diversity for courses of instruction, transferable and non-transferable classes, and on-campus activities and services, there are more than a few differences. To demonstrate the similarities and differences I have used as my study schools, Chaffey College and California State University, San Bernardino.

A huge consideration for most students is the cost to attend. The cost factor is one of the major differences between the schools for an in-coming freshman. A full-time student at Chaffey College can expect to

. . .
The cost of living on-campus in a dormitory or off-campus in an apartment varies with the specific living quarters, number of roommates, and meal plan choices.

Another primary consideration would be in the types of classes that are offered at each school. While these “other” fees can be astronomical, (books especially), they are very similar at both the Junior College and the University. Costs for this can range from around seven hundred-fifty dollars per month to over two thousand, five hundred dollars per month. A student who is pursuing transferable classes at the Junior College should do so under the advisement of a Guidance Counselor. Attending a local Junior College such as Chaffey is convenient and affordable in that you can maintain your current living arrangement, at home with mom and dad, and save on expenses. That fee is for tuition only and does not include other miscellaneous fees such as parking, Health Center fees, student union fees, and books. In my case, the comparison was clearly in favor of attending the Junior College. I can complete my two-year, Associate of Arts Degree and then transfer to a University when I have a more solid foundation and can make an informed career choice. To make the decision to attain a higher level of education than that which is required is setting a standard for yourself that will mold your future. Take the time, make the effort to compare your options. It is however possible for a freshman to take the exact same general education classes at both schools. Attending any college is a respectable choice. The same full-time student attending Cal State San Bernardino would pay more than six times that amount, or one thousand, eight hundred and sixty dollars per year.
