Since the arrival of man on earth, they have been surrounded by fear and suspicion that there was something invisible, a super natural force that determined the destiny of their lives. This fear and suspicion soon led man to seek ways to obtain peace with these superior powers. Many new religions formed from these expressions of sacrifice, prayer and rituals. In the 15th century, the birth of a child named Guru Nanak Dev Ji marked the birth of a new religion (Dr. Singh 32). This new religion was known as Sikhism. The term Sikh derived from the Sanskrit word for "disciple" and the term Guru stands for "teacher" or provider of knowledge and wisdom (Dr. Singh 32). Therefore, all Sikhs are considered to be disciples to the Gurus, the Sikh's spiritual leader. Sikhism originated in Punjab, and its founder was Guru Nanak Dev Ji, was born on the 19th of November 1469 in the town of Talwandi. Upon his death in 1539, his teachings had already been spread to a large number of disciples across northern India (Dr. Singh 32). Besides that, people who are already suffering from alcoholism and drug abuse can look into the teachings of Sikhism, which will give them hope and courage to recover from their addictions and allow them to once again become useful members of the society. Besides these ceremonies, Sikhs are also encouraged to organize prayer ceremonies such as Akhand Path, a non-stop cover to cover reading of the Guru Granth Sahib or Sukhmani da Path to commemorate joyous occasions such as births, marriages or when moving into a new house (Brar Festival's). This rise in divorces has caused a lot of social problems, especially among teenagers and young children. The killing of daughters is strictly forbidden (Brar Reht). During the ceremony, all family members, relatives and friends of the deceased, are encouraged to pay their last respects (Brar Festival's). Within the holy scriptures of the Guru Granth Sahib (Sikh Holy Scripture), Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first guru mentioned and emphasized an important statement regarding morality, "Greater than the Truth is Truthful living". Besides that, Sikhs are supposed to earn an honest living and willingly give help to the poor and the needy sincerely. Discrimination against women has been a major problem in societies worldwide and is still strongly present in many Asian societies. Besides that, the children themselves will have an opportunity to ask their parents for advice and get help in certain aspects of their lives. Sikhs are encouraged to provide voluntary services such as physical services or donation services. This aspect not only plays an important role in the family but also in the society. Sikh parents are encouraged to teach their children about the disadvantages of consuming alcohol and drugs through Sikhism. These bonds between family members are essential, as it is the basis for building relationships and unity in the society. Sikhism is a considered to be a practical religion and stresses on the importance of ethics and moral values. These teachings have laid a solid foundation in which Sikhs have looked into from time to time while bringing up their families.
