Hypothesis: "Two Bourrees" by J.S. Bach is more of a challenge to perform than "Etude 13" by L. Niehaus because the Two Bourrees was originally written for Violoncello, whereas, the Etude was composed specifically for the saxophone.The music of Bach and Niehaus exemplifies the style and characteristics of their period, namely, the Baroque and Twentieth-Century respectively. Through an analysis and comparison of the Two Bourrees by J.S. Bach and Etude 13 by Niehaus, I will prove that these two works are vastly contrasting in style and in their treatment of musical elements which all combine to make the Two Bourrees more of a challenge to perform than Etude 13. The Two Bourrees was originally written by Bach for 'Cello in the Baroque era and therefore contains such standard musical elements from that era including being in Ternary form (ABA), having a large range of dynamics ritardando's, a variety of articulations such as staccato (bar 2 of Bourree II), tenuto (3rd last bar of Bourree I), slur (bar 4 of Bourree II), staccato slur (bar 1 of Bourree I). Some of his well known pieces include the '48 Preludes and Fugues', the 'Goldburg Variations' and for keyboard, the 'Italian Concerto', the '6 French and English Suites' and the '15 two-part and 15 three-part inventions'.
