A Doll House

A Doll House is a play about a young woman’s struggle to find her inner self. Several events have taken which has leaded her into a position that will make her or break her and ultimately change her status quo.

Nora Helmer was not your ordinary housewife. My first inclination of her was a spoiled little doll that was married to very successful man with nothing less then the world to look forward to. She was blessed with a maid to make sure the house was kept up, a nurse who was like a second mother to her three children, and a newly promoted bank manger for a husband to bring home the bacon. It was apparent that her only real responsibility was to be every thing she was expected to be to keep her children and her husband happy. She did an excellent job of playing miss goody little wife and mother in her household. The image she created for herself was acceptable and moral and most of all kept her in a woman’s place.

It was not until Nora was reacquainted with her old friend Miss Kristine Linde that the true fibers of Nora Helmer where revealed. Miss Linde was a widow who’s husband left her with nothing. It had also seemed to her that Nora was carefree in the world and knew nothing of the worlds s

. . .

I believe that Nora would have hidden under this security blanket for as long as she could until a snake came along and threatened to reveal her secret. Sadly enough she used this strength to walk away from the man she thought she was in love with in order to create a life for herself. She finally uncovered her mask and showed her husband who she really was which was a very strong woman. Nora tells her about the sacrifices she had to make for her family and the struggle of all the odd jobs she had to take in order to pay the money back.

The only character that I can think to compare Nora to would be Superman. To the people in her every day life she is just Nora but when there is time for a hero she comes and saves the day. Instead of thinking of a way they could get though it together, he sulked in self-pity for his own life and his future as an individual. Krogstad was his name and he was the only one besides Miss Linde who knew of Nora’s forgery. He used his knowledge of Nora’s wrong doing as a bribe to force her to influence her husband to let him keep his job. Though she tries desperately to sustain her secret from him it was only a matter of time before he eventually found out. He was the same man that approved Nora’s loan at the bank and was also the same man that was about to lose his job as Mr.

Nora is now forced into a situation where she might have to reveal her inner secret to her husband.
