Ind Aff

“Ind Aff” by Fay Weldon is a story about a student who is in love with her professor named Peter. Peter cares about her, but does not do the necessary things to show that this is a serious relationship. The reader can see that the character of the female narrator does not stick up for herself in many aspects of this relationship. By the end of the story it is evident that the female narrator is a dynamic character because she starts out as an immature character, then changes into a more mature character.

The relationship between the narrator and peter appears to be an awkward one right from the start of the story. She is in this relationship for the wrong reasons, and these reasons have a direct role in the way Peter treats her. The narrator says, “He was supervising my thesis on varying concepts of morality”….I was dependant upon him for my academic future" (165). Her being dependent on him for such a huge thing like her thesis, makes it seem like this is why she is in the relationship in the first place. It seems that peter might feel that he has leverage over her because of this.

The narrator shows the reader just how immature she really is at the beginning of the story by being with Peter for status purposes. She talks

. . .

Everything that she says to him has to be a calculated thought, or else he will make her feel stupid. While they are supposed to be on a vacation together, all he seems to be doing is complaining and arguing with her. Later, she turns out to be more mature and is able to see that she has made a mistake, and must now move on with her life. The narrator says, “It seemed a why-cant-they-eat-cake sort of argument to me, but not knowing much about horticulture not to be outflanked if I debated the point, I moved the subject to safer ground” (167). She almost can’t help but stare at them and think to herself “What was I doing with this man with thinning hair? (169). She is involved with Peter to try and outdo her sister. This episode with Peter has changed her life for the better. She is aware of this, and is a stronger person because of it. He “Did his best to have [her] thesis refused” (170). She is jealous of what her sister has accomplished academically and romantically in her life. This is just the beginning of her change. But she also doesn’t care that “Peter [likes] to luxuriate in guilt and indecision”…. And I loved him with an inordinate affection” (166). Since she stopped seeing Peter without an explanation, he was rightfully upset.
