Insource

"Taos Insource" is a program by which Taos flexibly provides the expertise and labor to ensure a superior level of System and Network support, working closely with the client's existing staff and management. The benefit to the client is lower total cost and greater reliability than the alternatives of all regular staff or regular-staff plus traditional contractors.

One key to Insource's effectiveness is an intimate understanding of the client's environment, especially from the perspective of each person we have involved. A collateral benefit is that by applying our disciplines to their environment, the effectiveness of their regular staff can be maximized, and dependencies on their specific staff members are reduced.

Flexible support depends on having the right combination of people at any time. The required skill and experience mix needed for optimal an support level varies depending on the workload and the specific tasks to be done. The Insource model consciously minimizes the costs and impact associated with changing assigned personnel. An Insource responsibility of Taos is to proactively recognize when it's appropriate to "switch horses" and when doing so would be counter-productive.

By making it inexpensive and painless to swap specific people in & out, the client can run a much more efficient organization. In an IT environment this has the downside that skilled contractors are difficult to select and bring on, take time to come up to speed, and are often poor documenters who take with them a lot of client knowledge when they leave.

Given the benefits of Insource, a client that begins down this path might rarely open a permanent req: vacancies or new demands will generally be viewed as opportunities to reduce the dependencies on legacy staff, and create additional operational efficiencies through Insource services.

Companies which rely on an all-regular-staff model make a decision about staffing level that depends not only on the "average" level of need, but also on peak need, on the need for various skillsets due to current or future utilized technologies, and on a level of "insurance" against the event of an absence or the loss of a particular employee. An Insource client is assured of having the right mix of people and skills at any time, and is insulated from dependencies on particular regular or contract staff through methodical documentation of their environment. Think of it as a sort of "offsite storage" of intellectual property. An Insource client benefits from close collaboration in planning and leadership, access to Taos' SysAdmin IP and best practices, escalated support services, and offloaded management responsibilities. The net result of this is a planned staffing level that in general exceeds the average need by a substantial amount, yet in peak times is still insufficient to meet the workload. An Insource consultant maintains always-current documentation of his or her daily work, and Taos ensures that the environmental documentation also reflects current reality. Taos can assign fresh enthusiastic, capable staff in response to changing demands, or when the ones on assignment start to tire.

Finally, there is the issue of what to do with under-utilized staff during slack periods. We work proactively with client management to make sure that all the work being done is worthy of its cost, and by rotating people to other assignments we remove the necessity of assigning low-priority work to keep people interested.
